NIFT Entrance Exam Pattern – GAT & CAT
National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) offers 5 different programs- BDes, BFTech, MDes, MFM, MFTech. There is a different entrance exam for admission to each program.
One strategy to boost one’s chances of passing the NIFT 2026 / 2027 exam is to practice with NIFT sample papers and NIFT GAT Sample papers. This workout provides multiple benefits. GAT NIFT Exam Pattern - B.Des and M.Des
Creative Ability Test (CAT):
This test is administered to judge the intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development and design ability of the candidate. An important aspect of the test is the creative and innovative use of colour and illustration skills. About 3-4 questions come for 100 marks. They are all drawing and design related questions but not necessarily fashion related.
General Ability Test (GAT):
The language of the paper is English. This test will comprise various sections as given below:

Situation Test - For B.Des
Shortlisted candidates for B.Des from the written entrance examination (CAT and GAT papers) are required to take a Situation Test in April 2020. The Situation Test is a hands-on test to evaluate the candidate’s skills for material handling and innovative ability on a given situation with a given set of materials. The model will be evaluated on space visualization, innovative and creative use of given material, composition of elements, colour scheme, construction skill, finesse of the model and overall presentation etc. These parameters will be checked with the write up explaining the concept behind the model constructed. The language of the write up has to be English. P.S.- The use of outside/additional material in making the model/design is not permitted.
Group Discussion & Personal Interview for MDes / MFM / MFTech
I. Group Discussion:
Shortlisted candidates for Masters Programs from the written entrance examination are required to undergo Case Study based Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). GD would comprise approximately 15 to 20 minutes of discussion on a case study assigned, on which a panel of experts will assess the candidates on various parameters including:
- Conceptual clarity
- Knowledge of the topic assigned
- Contribution made to the topic
- Interpersonal skills
- Ability to generate new ideas
- Problem solving approach
- Leadership qualities
- Effective communication
II. Personal Interview:
Candidates shall be evaluated on the parameters as listed below by a panel, in the Personal Interview:
