Admission to the National Institute of Design is subject to Design Aptitude Test, Studio Test and Personal Interviews as required by the stream of subject opted by the candidate. NID will then place students on one of the campuses mentioned below. 

The following document consists of campus briefs on each NID campus that will guide students to the primary agenda of each campus followed by programmes. 

NID Ahmedabad

India’s first-ever design school, the National Institute of Design was established in Ahmedabad, Gujarat in 1961 inspired to a great extent by the Bauhaus Ideology that led to the world’s first design school in Germany in 1919.  

Making the Ahmedabad campus, the primary institute for design education a big league. NID further extended its branches to other cities such as Gandhinagar, Bangalore, Kurukshetra, Vijayawada, Assam and Bhopal with an intention to provide quality design education all over the country. 

NID Ahmedabad campus consists of various facilities for students to not only live on campus but also to liberate themselves in the ever-growing field of design with an appropriate atmosphere. 

HOSTEL

  • Separate hostel facilities for boys and girls as per availability accommodating approximately 450 and 200 students respectively (this facility is currently available for undergraduate students at the Paldi campus and at the Gandhinagar campus for post-graduate students).
  • Hostel accommodation is allotted every academic year on a single or shared occupancy basis. The allocation is based on the criteria drawn by the academic office. 
  • Students who do not opt to the hostel facilities may make their own accommodation arrangements, under the guidance of the institute if required. 
  • NID is under no obligation to provide hostel accommodation beyond its capacity. 
  • Priority for hostel accommodation is given to outstation students. 
  • Students residing in the NID hostel must observe its prevalent rules and regulations. 

DINING

  • NID provides nutritional meals to the students via the students’ mess committee.
  • Full subscription to the mess facilities is compulsory for all hostel residents. 
  • Mess charges for each semester will be collected by the Institute in advance along with semester fees at the beginning of the semester.

GUEST HOUSE

  • Guest house facilities may be made available only for parents of a student subject to availability on a payment basis. 
  • Students can approach the Corporate & Media Relations Office for booking of the Guest House routed through the Registrar.

HEALTH CARE

  • Doctors are available at the campus dispensary for consultation and advice at particular timings. 
  • There are no hospitalisation facilities on campus. In case of emergency, the local guardian shall be informed and arrangements can be made in only government hospitals when recommended by a doctor. 
  • All payments pertaining to availing these facilities are required to be borne by the students directly. 
  • Mediclaim is compulsory for all students and the student will be required to produce a copy at the time of registration. This copy must be submitted at the beginning of each academic year.
  • The academic administration/hostel wardens must be informed of any health problem and the action taken in this regard. 

COUNSELLING

  • Mental health issues like anxiety, depression or other concerns may lead to damaging one’s physical health as well as performance in academics. 
  • Some of these issues may initially seem minor, although they can increase in intensity and interfere with one’s daily functioning. 
  • The institute consults professional counsellors and facilitates their meetings with students to provide them with necessary guidance and solutions. 
  • The counsellors are available for consultation by appointment.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 

  • NID consists of a Students Activity Committee (SAC), a sociocultural organisation of the Institute that promotes a healthy academic environment. 
  • Student-friendly services include sports, social and special interest activities along with support and advice on any issue. 
  • Expenses incurred by the committee are met by a fund created by student contributions over the year.
  • The institute also contributes to this fund and other funds timely for any special activities or projects. 
  • The SAC is a non-political and nonadministrative body and is guided by the rules and regulations of NID for all its activities, and does not have any legal or another status for any matter except as a facilitating body for advising students. 
  • The student activity council functions through its various committees dealing with the canteen, sports, entertainment and through groups that plan social and cultural events on campus. 
  • Other facilities include a varied number of outdoor and indoor games, besides a gymnasium. 

NID Gandhinagar

This campus is located in the capital city of Gandhinagar in Gujarat. Various NID campuses serve different design disciplines. The Gandhinagar Campus offers a full-time residential program in M.Des (Master’s of Design) across seven disciplines currently that are: Lifestyle Accessory Design, Apparel Design, New Media Design, Toy & Game Design, Photography Design, Strategic Design Management, and Transportation & Automobile Design. 

The campus houses facilities and resources that are mentioned below:

  • Knowledge Management Center
  • Central Workshop for Wood & Metal
  • Laser Cutting
  • CNC Machine
  • 3D Printing
  • Digital Lab 
  • And Discipline Specific Labs/Studios

Providing students with a plethora of learning opportunities, and assisting them to enhance their creative skills. The campus also carries a spacious auditorium/amphitheatre for holding important conferences, seminars and cultural events besides a dedicated space to the Design Gallery that is home is frequent exhibitions. 

Apart from the above-mentioned facilities, the campus also proudly carries the ICNF (Innovation Center for Natural Fibre, which is actively engaged in finding design applications for natural fibres.

 

NID Bengaluru

NID Bengaluru campus is one of the primary extensions of the National Institute of Design associated with the parent campus in Ahmedabad. Located in Yeshvanthpur, a sub-locality of the northwestern part of Bengaluru city in the state of Karnataka. Set up with funding in a joint initiative of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India, this campus was inaugurated in March 2006 and stands as a set-up on the 2-acre site.

The campus commences with two PG programmes: Design for Digital Experience and Design for Retail Experience from the academic year 2007-2008. NID Bengaluru campus offers only Masters in Design programmes in Design for Retail Experience, Digital Game Design, Information Design, Interaction Design and Universal Design. 

Bengaluru, the IT city of India, carries out educational and research activities at the campus that are in sync with the city’s ecosystem and focus on digital inclusion in their products, and processes across the various disciplines.

Faculty members of the campus have taken up many research projects under various labs such as E-Kalpa Lab (Digital Online Learning Environment for Design) funded by the Ministry of Human Resources, Digital Hampi Lab (Digital Reconstruction of Hampi Monuments & Bazaars) funded by the Department of Science and Technology. The campus has collaborated with various industry partners on research initiatives and actively seeks to build industry-academia research collaborations.

NOTE:

In early 2007, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India envisioned the National Design Policy aimed at creating a design-enabled innovation economy and strengthening design education in the country. The National Design Policy had recommended setting up design institutes on the lines of NID, Ahmedabad in various parts of India to promote design programmes. Under this Action Plan, 4 new NIDs have been set up in Andhra Pradesh (Amaravati), Assam (Jorhat), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal) and Haryana (Kurukshetra).

 

NID Kurukshetra

Established in 2016, the National Institute of Design, Haryana, is an autonomous institution under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, to develop as a global leader in Design Education and Research. The institute aims at becoming the torchbearer for innovative design directions in the industry, commerce and development sectors. 

The multidisciplinary environment on this campus consists of diverse design domains that help in creating an innovative and holistic ecosystem for design learning and providing solutions focusing on the emerging needs of people integrated with digital and cutting-edge technologies.

NID Haryana currently offers full-time four-year-long programmes in the stream of Bachelor’s of Design (B.Des.) with the following specializations:

  • Industrial Design
  • Communication Design 
  • Textile & Apparel Design

The bachelor’s programme comprises a two-semesters rigorous foundation course followed by six semesters of specialized courses. The teaching methodology incorporates Industry and Field exposure. Their vision is to provide design education that is rooted in values, consistent with responding to social context, enhancing the quality of life and preparing thought leaders to address emerging challenges and needs in our dynamic world.

FACILITIES

NID Haryana provides an extensive range of facilities for its students. Few necessary facilities are listed below:

HOSTEL

  • Separate facilities for boys and girls. 
  • Safety and security are taken on priority by the hostel management.
  • Well-furnished rooms, 24×7 water supply, electricity and security systems.

LIBRARY

  • Numerous collections of textbooks, reference books, national and international journals, periodicals, newspapers, magazines, etc. 

SPORTS

  • Both indoor and outdoor facilities are available on the campus of NID Haryana such as chess, carrom, badminton, table tennis, cricket, basketball, hockey, volleyball, etc.

CAFETERIA

  • The campus carries a well-ventilated cafeteria and serves hygienically-prepared fresh meals to the students at regular intervals and at reasonable prices.

IT INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Well maintained and updated.
  • Controls and manages the networking of the entire campus.

LABORATORIES 

  • Department-specific laboratories.
  • Modern types of equipment, instruments and apparatus to help the students in practicals. 

 

NID Vijayawada

An extension to the ever-growing family of the National Institutes of Design, the Vijayawada campus is presently intaking 75 students per year for the B.Des (Bachelor’s of Design) programme. One of the four new campuses of NID has been brought under the ambit of the NID Act, 2014 through the NID Amendment Bill, 2019, which has been passed by the parliament. Honourable President has accorded assent to the NID Amendment Act 2019 on November 29th, 2019. The corresponding Act has been published in the Gazette of India on December 3rd, 2019. The said Act has come into force on 13/01/2020 vide a Gazette notification dated 13th January 2020. 

HOSTEL

  • Hostel facilities are open to students throughout their academic journey, excluding the last semester where students are headed for internships/self-initiated projects and gain their own accommodation.

MESS

  • Mess charges may vary.
  • Mess is equipped with nutritious meals for the day.

CAMPUS LIFE

  • Various extracurricular activities are held throughout the academic year. 
  • NIDUS is a design shop open for all members of the campus and also alumni students to showcase their works.

 

NID Assam

The National Institute of Design (NID), Assam is an autonomous Institution of National Importance under Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India established at Jorhat through the NID (Amendment) Act, 2019 passed by the Parliament of India. It is an Institution established to provide Design Education and has the mandate to award the Bachelor’s degree in Design (B.Des.). The Institute commenced its academic session on 29th July 2019. NID Assam’s presence in Jorhat gives a great opportunity to young creative talent and design aspirants from North East India and across the country.

NID Madhya Pradesh offers a full-time four-year Bachelor’s Programme in Design (B.Des.) in the academic year 2022-23 with specialization streams of Industrial Design, Communication Design, and Textile & Apparel Design with a multi-disciplinary approach to design education. Maximum seats in any programme can be 30, keeping the total seats as 86.

NID Bhopal is equipped with necessary facilities for students living on campus for accommodation as well as setting an appropriate educational environment. Find details below:

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CANDIDATE

STEP 1: CHECK THE M.DES FINAL RESULT. 

The candidates can access the final result with their login credentials.

STEP 2: ROUND 1 SEAT ALLOTMENT

Based on seat availability, shortlisted candidates will be allotted a seat in the order of merit in their respective category. Candidates are required to confirm their seat by making the necessary payment of the non-refundable fee for seat confirmation and uploading the documents within the provided time limit. 

Allotment of seats will be based on the preferences of the discipline submitted by the candidate during the online application. 

In a case where the candidate has applied for two disciplines and gets shortlisted for both disciplines, the candidate will be allotted a seat in the discipline marked as a first preference only. Their seat for discipline preference no.2 will be allotted to the next candidate in order of merit. Such candidates will not be able to claim their seat (in the discipline preference no.2) at any later stage of the admission process.

In another case, if the candidate gets selected for the discipline marked as preference no.2, the candidate will be allotted a seat in the discipline marked as preference no.2.

Lastly, if the candidate has applied in two disciplines and is eligible for both although is shortlisted in preference no.2, the candidate will be allotted a seat. If a vacancy arises in preference no.1 then by default the candidate will be allotted a seat in preference no.1, based on merit. The seat of this candidate in the discipline marked as preference no.2 will then be offered to the next candidate in order of merit and preference.

Please note that obtaining a rank in the merit list does not guarantee admission to the discipline of your choice in the M.Des programme.

STEP 1: CHECK THE B.DES FINAL RESULT. 

Candidates can view their results by entering their login credentials.

STEP 2: SUBMISSION OF CAMPUS PREFERENCE

  • Candidates are required to submit their campus preference based on the availability of seats and in the order of merit, in the respective category and campus. 
  • Candidates can modify their selection multiple times only between July 04 to July 06, 2022.
  • The last selection of the campus after the deadline will be considered final.
  • If the candidate fails to submit campus preference during the given period, he/she will lose the chance to proceed further in the admission process.
  • It will be considered that the candidate is not interested to opt for the seat and the seat will be offered to the next candidate in order of merit in the respective category.
  • Such candidates cannot participate in the subsequent admission process.

STEP 3: ROUND 01 SEAT ALLOTMENT

  • Based on the preference, in order of merit and number of available seats, category-wise, the candidate will be provisionally allotted a seat on the campus selected by him/her. 
  • In order to confirm the seat, the candidate will be provided with a window, as per the schedule mentioned above, for (a) making a payment of a Non-Refundable Fee for the confirmation of the seat and (b)Uploading the documents, within the provided time-limit as mentioned above.  

 

Please note that obtaining a rank in the merit list does NOT guarantee admission to the B.Des programme.

Payment of Non-Refundable Fee for the confirmation of seat:

  1. INR 30,000/- (online payment) + Convenience Charges (as applicable) for GEN, GEN EWS,

OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD candidates;

  1. INR 75,000/ (online payment) + Convenience Charges (as applicable) for Overseas Candidates.

Documents to be uploaded:

The candidate will have to upload the following documents as a single pdf file of size, not more than 10 MB:

  1. Anyone valid photo identity (Aadhar Card, Election ID, Driving License, PAN Card/Valid

Passport)

  1. Birth Certificate OR School Leaving Certificate
  2. 10th Mark-sheet
  3. 12th Mark-sheet (in case not issued, the digital copy of the same duly attested by the

School Principal needs to be uploaded OR candidates whose Class 12 results are awaited

will have to upload the bonafide certificate (format available on the admissions website}

issued by the Principal of the School {last attended} clearly specifying the Roll No. and

expected date of announcement of the results of the qualifying examination, before the

deadline)

  1. GEN-EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST Certificate, if applicable
  2. PwD Certificate, if applicable
  3. Valid Passport, if applied under Supernumerary (Overseas) category**

*Candidates who have completed final examinations for class XII (or equivalent) outside India

or from a Board not specified in the Admission Handbook, 2022-23 must produce an equivalence certificate (check Admissions Handbook 2022-23 for detailed information.

**The candidates who have applied under the Overseas category should produce a valid

passport. It is the candidate’s responsibility to obtain relevant visas and ensure that their

passport is valid for the duration of the programme.

If the candidate fails to make the payment of the NON-REFUNDABLE Fee for the confirmation of

A seat within the given period as mentioned above, the provisional allocation of seats will be

cancelled, and the seat will be allotted to the next qualifying candidate in the order of merit. Such

candidates cannot participate in the subsequent admissions process.

If the candidate fails to upload the documents within the given period as mentioned above, even

after making the payment of the NON REFUNDABLE Fee, the provisional allocation of seats will be cancelled and the seat will be allotted to the next qualifying candidate in order of merit. Such a candidate cannot participate in the subsequent admission process.

STEP 4: DOCUMENT VERIFICATION

  1. Uploaded documents will be verified against the information provided by the candidate in their application form during online application by the respective NIDs.
  2. Upon verification, if the documents are found to be incorrect/invalid, the candidature of such candidate will stand cancelled, and the seat will be allotted to the next qualifying candidate in order of merit in their respective category. 

STEP 5: ISSUE OF PROVISIONAL OFFER LETTERS OF ADMISSION

Based on the merit number of the candidates and availability of seats, Provisional Offers Letters of Admission will be issued to those candidates with verified and correct documents by respective NIDs. 

The payment of the remaining fees would be communicated to the candidates by the respected NIDs directly wherein the candidate is provisionally admitted. 

STEP 6: ROUND 02 SEAT ALLOCATION

The seats remaining vacant after Round 01 of Seat Allotment will be opened for allotment in Round 02, the dates for which shall be intimated later by the respective NIDs.
