ADMISSION GUIDE 2026

JoSAA 2026: Complete Counselling Guide for IIT, NIT, IIIT & GFTI Admissions

Everything you need to know — eligibility, choice filling, seat allocation rounds, Freeze/Float/Slide strategy, documents & FAQs.

Overview & Governance: What is JoSAA?

JoSAA — the Joint Seat Allocation Authority — is the single body that manages seat allocation for all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs across India. Instead of dealing with multiple counselling portals, every eligible JEE candidate goes through one centralized process at josaa.nic.in.

JoSAA is jointly governed by two apex bodies:

JAB (JEE Apex Board)

  • Governs IIT seat allocation
  • Frames policy & merit lists
  • Oversees JEE Advanced rankings

CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board)

  • Manages NIT+ system seats
  • Handles special & supernumerary rounds
  • Uses JEE Main rankings
OFFICIAL WARNING

The only authorized portal is josaa.nic.in. No third-party agent or website is authorized to assist with seat allocation. Beware of scams.

Who is Eligible for JoSAA 2026 Counselling?

Eligibility depends on which institutes you are targeting:

For IITs

  • Valid JEE Main 2026 (Paper 1) score
  • Valid JEE Advanced 2026 rank
  • AAT 2026 (for Architecture programmes)

For NITs / IIITs / GFTIs

  • Valid JEE Main 2026 rank
  • JEE Main Paper 2 for B.Arch / B.Planning

Class XII Requirements — You must have passed Class XII with a minimum of 5 subjects. You also need either 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) or a rank in the top 20 percentile of your respective board.

Reservation Categories:

GEN GEN-EWS OBC-NCL SC ST PwD
SUPERNUMERARY SEATS

Additional seats — above the regular sanctioned intake — are available for female candidates (gender diversity quota) and foreign nationals. These are separate from the main category seats.

Seat Matrix & How Merit / Tie-Breaking Works

The seat matrix — listing the exact number of seats available at each institute and programme — is published on the JoSAA portal during the choice filling window. It covers regular seats, supernumerary seats for female candidates, and special seats for foreign nationals.

Merit basis: IIT seats use JEE Advanced rank; NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats use JEE Main rank. Tie-breaking order:

  • 1 Higher JEE subject marks — The candidate scoring higher in relevant JEE subject papers gets priority.
  • 2 Older age preferred — The candidate who is older in age receives higher preference.
  • 3 Better Class XII performance — Performance in relevant Class XII subjects is used as the final tie-breaker.

How to Fill Choices on JoSAA 2026

Choice filling is the most critical step — your seat allocation depends entirely on the order in which you list your preferences.

  • 1 Register & Login — Access josaa.nic.in and verify your identity via OTP.
  • 2 Browse & Select Choices — Search and add institutes and programmes. Fill the maximum number of choices — more choices means more chances.
  • 3 Rank Your Preferences — Order your list from most preferred to least preferred. Put your dream institute at the top — JoSAA always tries to allocate your highest-ranked available preference first.
  • 4 Save Your Choices — Your last saved choices will auto-lock at the deadline even if you forget to lock manually. Save regularly.
  • 5 Lock Your Choices — Once satisfied, lock your choices before the deadline. No edits are allowed after locking.
STRATEGY TIP

Include both ambitious choices and safe options in your list. Once choices are locked — or auto-locked at the deadline — no changes are possible under any circumstance.

How Seat Allocation Works: The Rounds

JoSAA 2026 typically conducts 6 to 7 allocation rounds. In each round, seats are provisionally allotted based on your merit rank, preference order, seat availability, and category reservation.

After receiving an allotment, you must upload your documents within 2 days and pay the seat acceptance fee to confirm your seat. Missing this window means losing your allotment.

AFTER EACH ROUND

You choose one of three options — Freeze, Float, or Slide — which determines whether you stay with your current seat or continue seeking upgrades in subsequent rounds.

Freeze, Float & Slide — Explained Simply

These three options are the most misunderstood part of JoSAA. Here's what each one means:

Option What it means Effect
FREEZE Accept your current seat as final No further participation; seat is reserved for you
FLOAT Accept seat + seek upgrade at any institute If a higher-ranked choice opens anywhere, you get it automatically
SLIDE Accept seat + seek upgrade within same institute If a higher preference opens in your current institute, you move to it
CRITICAL RULES

Float and Slide are NOT available in the final round — only Freeze is permitted. If you receive a first-choice allocation, you must Freeze. Rejecting your seat entirely disqualifies you from all further JoSAA rounds.

JoSAA 2026 Key Deadlines

JoSAA operates on a strict schedule — no extensions are granted. The exact 2026 dates will be on josaa.nic.in. Based on previous years:

  • 1. Choice Filling & Locking Window Fill, edit, and lock your programme preferences. Don't wait till the last day.
  • 2. Document Upload (per round) After each allotment, upload scanned documents within 2 days. No extensions granted.
  • 3. Seat Acceptance Fee Payment Pay online to confirm your allocated seat. Unpaid = seat forfeited.
  • 4. Withdrawal Window Available from Round 2 onwards. IITs — before mid-July; NIT+ system — ~1 week later (2026 dates TBC).
  • 5. Physical Reporting at Institute Report with all original documents as per schedule. Missing this leads to automatic seat cancellation — no exceptions.
STAY UPDATED

Always check josaa.nic.in for the official 2026 schedule. Dates may shift slightly from the previous year.

Documents Required for JoSAA 2026

Have these scanned and ready before results are announced. You'll need to upload within 2 days of each allotment and bring originals at physical reporting.

  • JEE Advanced / JEE Main Rank Card
  • Class X & XII Marksheets and Passing Certificates
  • Category Certificate (OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS / PwD — as applicable)
  • Valid Photo ID Proof (Aadhaar / Passport / Voter ID)
  • JoSAA Seat Allotment Letter (downloaded from portal)
  • Recent passport-size photographs
  • Medical fitness certificate (as required by institute)

JoSAA 2026 — Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions students ask most during counselling season.

Q: Who conducts JoSAA and what is its authority?
A: JoSAA is jointly governed by JAB (the JEE Apex Board, which oversees IITs) and CSAB (the Central Seat Allocation Board, which oversees NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs). Technical operations are managed by NIC — making JoSAA the single authoritative body for all centrally funded engineering admissions in India.
Q: What if I forget to lock my choices before the deadline?
A: JoSAA automatically locks your last saved choices at the deadline. Always save your choices as you go and lock manually well before the deadline — if you haven't saved anything, you may lose your chance to participate.
Q: Can I upgrade my seat after choosing Freeze?
A: No. Choosing Freeze means you have accepted your current seat as final. Your participation in JoSAA ends immediately. Only choose Freeze when fully satisfied with your allotted seat.
Q: What is the difference between Float and Slide?
A: Both keep you in subsequent rounds while retaining your current seat as a safety net. Float allows upgrades to any institute in your preference list; Slide restricts upgrades to programmes within your currently allotted institute only.
Q: Is the seat acceptance fee refundable?
A: Yes, in most cases. You receive a full refund if no seat is allotted in any round, or if you withdraw before physical reporting. Partial refunds may apply based on individual institute rules — refer to Annexure 8 of the JoSAA Business Rules.
Q: What happens if I miss physical reporting at my institute?
A: Your seat is cancelled — no exceptions, no extensions. Physical reporting is mandatory. Track the reporting schedule published by your institute and attend on time with all original documents.
Q: What are supernumerary seats and who can apply?
A: Supernumerary seats are additional seats above the regular sanctioned intake — they do not reduce seats for other candidates. Available for female candidates (gender diversity initiative) and foreign nationals (separate quota).
Q: What happens if I don't get a seat in any JoSAA round?
A: If eligible for the NIT+ system (JEE Main candidates), you may participate in CSAB Special Rounds held after JoSAA concludes. IIT candidates (JEE Advanced rank holders) cannot participate in further rounds if not allotted a seat.
Q: How many rounds does JoSAA 2026 conduct?
A: JoSAA typically conducts 6 to 7 allocation rounds. Vacant seats from each round are reallocated in the next, improving your chances over time. The exact number for 2026 will be announced on the portal.
Q: Can I change my category or personal details after registering?
A: Some personal details can be corrected online before physical reporting, subject to verification. However, the category cannot be changed after registration. Always double-check your details at the time of registration.

Key Takeaways for JoSAA 2026

  • JoSAA is the only authorized body — to avoid all third-party agents and unofficial websites.
  • Fill the maximum number of choices and order them carefully — higher preferences are always considered first.
  • Include both ambitious and safe options in your list to maximize chances.
  • Choose Freeze only when satisfied; use Float for a wide upgrade, Slide for a branch upgrade within the same institute.
  • Upload documents within 2 days of allotment and pay the seat acceptance fee — both are mandatory.
  • Deadlines are absolute — no extensions under any circumstances.
  • Physical reporting is mandatory; missing it cancels your seat with no recourse.
  • Track josaa.nic.in regularly for your official 2026 schedule and updates.
